ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is the scientific study of human behavior. It’s a therapeutic approach that applies principles of behavior to improve socially significant behaviors (e.g., social skills, communication, daily living skills) and reduce unsafe behaviors (e.g., aggression, risky behaviors likely to result in harm). Its approach identifies environmental variables responsible for behaviors and then systematically modifies the environment to improve behavior. ABA utilizes a data-based decision-making model. Data are collected throughout assessment and treatment processes. Decisions to make treatment changes are made based on analysis of the data. The effectiveness of ABA in behavior change is backed by more than 50 years of peer reviewed research.
